Will Saquon Barkley get a new long-term contract? Will Daniel Jones play on Sunday? 10 thoughts on the Giants – the Athletic

The buzz of the Giants’ Week 4 victory over the Saints certainly dissipated quickly. An injury-ravaged 44-20 loss to the Cowboys in Week 5 took a toll on any good mood. Here are 10 thoughts on the Giants as they try to get back on track against the Rams 4-1 on Sunday:

1. If Saquon Barkley hadn’t torn up his ACL last September, the Giants would likely have been forced to make a major financial decision over the running back’s future during the offseason. But with Barkley coming off a season in which he only played two games, there was no talk of a lucrative contract extension like other top running backs signed after their third season.

The Giants made the obvious decision in April to exercise Barkley’s $ 7.2 million fifth-year option for 2022. But it’s hard to imagine Barkley just playing his contract when peers like Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara signed early extensions with $ 39 million. and $ 34 million guaranteed, respectively.

Barkley had to prove his durability this season after tearing the ACL in 2020 and missing three games in 2019 with a sprained ankle. But he suffered a sprained ankle early in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys. Barkley won’t play this week, but the injury shouldn’t lead to a long absence.
