Wayne Chrebet welcomes Jeremy Ruckert, the Jets’ ‘new local hero’

Wayne Chrebet knows what it’s like to be a local player playing for the Jets.

The Garfield, New Jersey native donned green and white from 1995-2005 after leaving Hofstra on Long Island undrafted. After being the “Hometown Hero” once, the wide receiver recently welcomed new local Gang Green star Jeremy Ruckert to the organization.

The Jets made Ruckert a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after a solid career at Ohio State. Ruckert was born in Lindenhurst on Long Island and grew up a die-hard Jets fan. Ruckert’s family often attended Jets games and training camp when the team was still training at Hofstra.

New York would like Ruckert’s success story to be a bit like Chrebet’s. The catcher is considered an all-time Jet, having recorded 580 receptions for 7,365 and 41 touchdowns during a career spent exclusively with the Jets.

With receivers like fellow Jets rookies Garret Wilson and Chris Olave surrounding him, Ruckert has never posted prolific receiving numbers at Ohio State. He had 54 catches for 615 yards and 12 touchdowns in college. The hope is that Ruckert will blossom more into becoming an impact passer at the professional level.

For now, the homegrown talent will learn behind CJ Uzomah and Tyler Conklin.
