How will Davis Mills fare in his second season as the Houston Texans’ starting quarterback? This is perhaps the most important non-astros sports question in town this year. In his rookie year, 2021, Mills played in 13 games, started 11, and finished the season as, subjectively and in many statistical ways, one of the top two rookie quarterbacks for 2021.
Here are Mills’ numbers for his entire rookie season:
COMP %: 66.8%
TD PASS: 16
PASS NOTE: 88.8
BAGS (Yds): 31 (206 yards)
It was a two-season catch for Mills. There have been his first six starts after taking over from an injured Tyrod Taylor after Week 2:
COMP %: 69.11 percent
TD PASS: 6
PASS NOTE: 82.3
BAGS (Yds): 19 (124 yards)
And then there were his last five starts, having replaced an ineffective Tyrod Taylor after Week 13:
COMP %: 68.42 percent
TD PASS: 9
PASS NOTE: 102.4
BAGS (Yds): 9 (62 yards)
For some perspective, Mills’ passer rating of 82.3 in his first six starts, if made over the course of the entire 2021 season, would have placed him 28th overall, just ahead of Jacoby Brissett. Mills’ 102.4 passer rating in his last five starts would have placed him 7th, just AHEAD of Tom Brady! When you add that positive trend together, along with the fact that the pass defenses the Texans face in 2022, on average, rank 18th in DVOA pass defense on Football Outsiders, I’m very intrigued by these Davis Mills prop bets of the season, courtesy of BetOnline.ag:

I feel good about two overs — passing yards and touchdowns — and one under on interceptions. Let’s put a sawbuck on each and ride the Mills Express in 2022!
