-ABOUT GUYS AND DOLLS-
Hailed as the perfect musical, the award-winning classic Guys and Dolls plays with luck and love under the lights of Broadway. This 1950 Tony Award winner for Best Musical is based on short stories by American author Damon Runyon. New York’s most infamous crap game organizer Nathan Detroit, hoping for a big payday, challenges notorious gambler Sky Masterson to a bet he’s sure to win: take mission girl Sarah Brown diner in Havana, Cuba. Sky agrees and pursues the known, seemingly hopeless prude, while Nathan deals with his own situation – his 14-year-old fiancée, Adelaide, who is tired of waiting for a wedding. When betting and love seem at odds, the characters are called upon to question their priorities to make things right.
Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even the sewers of New York, but ultimately everyone ends up where they belong.
Frank Loesser’s brassy, immortal score and most memorable tunes, including the hilarious “Adelaide’s Lament”, the romantic “I’ve Never Been in Love Before”, the exuberant “If I Were a Bell” and the classic “Luck Be a Lady,” made Guys and Dolls a crowd pleaser. When it opened on Broadway in 1950, it won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. from Broadway, it has established itself as a staple of American musicals. It is based on short stories by Damon Runyon, an American author and journalist who favored stories about the most sordid events on Broadway.
