FIND TWP. – Fans of air travel and innovation may be excited to hear that a new terminal is opening in Pittsburgh this week, opening the airways to new possibilities from Steel City.
Pittsburgh International Airport will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new terminal at 2 p.m. Thursday. The ceremony will feature a variety of local and state officials, including Allegheny County Executive Director Rich Fitzgerald and County Airport Authority Executive Director Christina Cassotis.
The inauguration will take place on the construction site of the new 700,000 square foot terminal and transportation complex at PIT, which is currently scheduled to open in 2025. The new structure will be part of the terminal modernization program, a project of $ 1.39 billion which aims to improve airport facilities and advance surrounding regions.
People attending the event must wear a mask at all times and seats will be socially distanced throughout the event. The ceremony will take place in a tent, and the inauguration will take place even with the rain in the area.
PIT will house the first new terminal designed and built after the pandemic, which caused massive air travel stoppages.
