The coming weeks bring shows with Steve Carell, Rob McElhenney, Abbi Jacobson, Danny DeVito, Diego Luna, Sharon Horgan, Cherry Jones and a little talking tree.
We will never reach a point where there will be a normal television month. There will always be wild new streaming developments or consolidations or big splashes to help steer the overall conversation. Change is inevitable.
But, as summer draws to a close, August offers a pretty indicative glimpse of what, for now, is a TV comfort zone. There’s a mix of animated programs and documentaries amid a global push to join the buzzy ranks. Platforms are making big bets on reviving classics, spin-offs take center stage, and historical figures become subjects for reinvention. Mix a Marvel and a Star Wars and a handful of famous people rush into a field where they aren’t exactly experts and you have a month that checks out a whole lot of modern TV boxes.
As usual, this preview covers all shows outside of the Netflix domain. If you’re curious about what’s going on with them, you can find the full August recap here. And if you missed any of our past roundups, you can browse premieres from January, February, March, April, May, June, July, or even that bygone era of 2021.
