Montanans, how much is the waste in your cupboards and garage worth?

I spent the last week going through my childhood home and all of my parents’ belongings after my father passed away as we prepared to hold an auction. Let me tell you, there’s a certain emotion involved when you go through 50+ years of things and memories. (Here’s a tip for all of you who have kids and think that one day those kids will want all your stuff, they won’t.)

Trust me on this one.

I came across things I hadn’t seen in 30 or more years, and things I had never seen before. It was a walk down memory lane as far as technology goes. I’ve come across old landlines, huge calculators, old computers and cell phones, VCRs, records, CDs, old video games, and the list goes on and on. So, is all that old stuff really worth the money?

Well, it depends.

Some of these retro electronics may fetch a few bucks, but you have to put in the work. Your best bet for most of these things is eBay or something like Facebook Market Place. However, if you have the time and patience, it could definitely be worth it.

So how much does a decent VCR/DVD combo cost? I ask because I found a couple in my parents’ garage. According eBayyou can expect to earn up to $350 for one.

So what about old cell phones? I’ve come across a few of them and you can actually sell old phones and make some money. Of course, the newer the phone the more it’s worth, however, if you have older phones it can be fun to see what you can get for them. is a website that buys old phones, and it’s definitely worth seeing what your old phone is worth.

How about old video games and game consoles? I came across an original Nintendo console and an original Xbox console. Both were auctioned off for next to nothing. Who knows, you might be sitting on a pile of cash when it comes to these types of electronics.

Of course, there are also pawnshops and antique shops and who knows, maybe some of those space-consuming items might end up being worth something. Maybe there’s an old record worth a few hundred dollars or old kitchen utensils that people collect. It is definitely worth looking into and could end up being something lucrative for you. In addition, you will be doing a favor to your children.
