You hear some of the stories of miners around the world trapped deep in caves. Sometimes rescue efforts can take weeks. It’s certainly a terrifying thought that must really strike a chord with anyone who might be suffering from claustrophobia. Unfortunately, not all minors get out. Fortunately, a local man needed just over an hour to be rescued after being trapped in a quarry on Tuesday afternoon.
NBC reports that the 40-year-old man was trapped in a mine in Wingdale when a boulder, weighing more than 40 tons, came loose and fell on the excavator he was using. Authorities say the man was conscious when they entered the mine. NBC says there were around 2,500 in the mine when the accident happened. Rescuers worked together to free the man, who was then airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Rescuers and first responders are always on hand to lend a hand to those in need. But sometimes those they save are not always human. Officials called it a team effort when they were dispatched to free a deer stuck between a fence in Rockland County earlier this week. This involved further innovation, as the device used to release distressed wildlife has often been used over the years to aid humans trapped in wrecks. ABC says the deer got stuck in a fence in the town of Ramapo. Officers from the Ramapo City Police Department were reportedly unable to release the animal, so they called for reinforcements. Soon the Hillcrest Fire Company was on the scene. ABC says they used the “Jaws of Life” to safely release the deer. The deer was then able to break free and, although a little shaken, it is said to be fine.
