Day Shift is the most fun I’ve had watching a vampire movie in a long time

day shift, a Netflix Original that premiered on the streaming service on August 12, is an action-packed, stunt and hilarious vampire buddy comedy that’s full of faces you know and comes complete with a soundtrack. -sound of killer. Stuntman turned stunt coordinator then assistant director JJ Perry makes his directorial debut with this action-packed vampire gore-fest – and every side of his journey is on display through the incredible fight choreography and stunts which constitute the bulk of day shift. Does the film have any plot holes? Yes. Does he break most of the rules he sets on how to kill a vampire? Yes. Does the film set up plot points that seem important but ultimately lead nowhere? Yes. Did I care in the end? NOPE!

You must know I grew up in the 80s and 90s when Jamie Foxx launched his comedic styles on In living color and Snoop Dogg made his doggy style debut with the incomparable Dr. Dre. My first vampire movie was the lost boyswho day shift pays tribute on several occasions – including the last line of the film which recalls the famous lost boys line “One thing about living in Santa Carla that I could never stomach… All those fucking vampires.” I’m also a WWE fan, so all the high-flying acrobatic moves and over-the-top violence in the fight scenes had me cheering “this is awesome” from my couch.

day shift begins with a bang, as Bud Jablonski (JamieFoxx) works his cover job as a pool cleaner waiting for his moment to break into a nondescript suburban house and kill some vampires. From the first fight, the vampires are revealed to be contortionists, adepts in Tae Kwon Do, who come back from anything but silver and wood to the heart and/or decapitation. After Bud has killed the vampires and pocketed their teeth to sell in the vampire teeth market, he picks up his daughter Paige (a little late because you never know how long a vampire fight will last) and drops her off at home with his-future-ex-wife Jocelyn, played by Megan Good (Shazam!). Jocelyn tells him that she is taking their daughter to live with her mother in Florida unless he can find the money for tuition AND braces by Monday. Cue accelerated the vampire killing program.

The Day Shift Vampire Hunters have unionized

Since Bud is having fun against the union, he can’t sell the teeth he gets from his hunts for a decent price. The type of vampire and the age of the vampire determine the market value – which is reduced at the pawnshop where he is forced to sell his wares. Due to lack of time, he asks Big John (Snoop Dogg) for a favor to bring him back into the syndicate where there are perks like selling teeth at full value and health insurance. Since he has so many violations on his file, the supervisor (Ralph played by Eric Lange) accompanies him with a union representative – Seth (David Franco) an office man who is not cut out for the job in the field, but is desperate for a promotion. This is the crazy veteran cop/terrified rookie cop part of the movie. As further punishment, Bud is kicked off the night shift where all the real action takes place and relegated to the day shift – and there you have it, the title of your movie.

There is a more in-depth subplot where a female Uber vampire (who is the most powerful of the four types) Audrey San Fernando played by the stunning Karla Souza (How to get away with murder) buys all the properties in the San Fernando Valley and populates them with super strong sunscreen vampires that allow them to survive the sun for up to 20 minutes. Her goal is to make vampires unstoppable, with her as an all-powerful vampire on top of the mountain. Audrey’s strategy leads to the BEST fight scene where Bud and Seth team up with the Nazarian brothers (martial arts magician Scott Adkins and Steve Howey from Shameless) to eliminate a HUGE nest of vampires in the middle of the suburbs. When Bud angers Audrey, things get really crazy as she sets out for revenge.

I’ve seen mixed reviews on day shift, which I can understand considering all the plot points introduced and then ignored. But the movie is so much fun that I don’t care! The fight choreography is crazy, the gore factor makes me wonder what they spent on blood alone, there’s one hell of a car chase and the movie is FUNNY – no subject is safe from to be the butt of a joke. Despite what some critics have said, I think Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco have GREAT chemistry, and of course Snoop Dogg is front and center in every scene he has. If you’re looking for creepy vampires, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for brooding vampires (I’m looking at you, brilliant Edward Cullen), this isn’t it. If you are looking lethal weapon meets From dusk till dawn meets the lost boysday shift covered you… in blood.

Do you think Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco have the chemistry to pull off comedy in Day Shift? Let me know in the comments!
