Burrards pick character, draft captains – Maple Ridge News

The Maple Ridge Burrards took on a few Junior A team captains with their top picks from the Western Lacrosse Association Junior Draft.

With their first pick, the Burrards took Garrett Winter from Mission, who was the captain of the Port Coquitlam Saints Junior A team.

Winter has 41 goals and 88 points in 36 games for the Saints.

“He’s an explosive right-handed offensive player,” said team general manager Lance Andre, who said his first pick of 2022 is playing determined play and showing good leadership.

“With as young as we are, he’s going to fit in perfectly.”

Winter has older brothers in the Burrard organization, top defenseman DJ Saari and assistant coach Bobby Saari.

He was also signed by the San Diego Seals of the NLL.

Cole Catton was their second choice and he was the brave captain of the New Westminster Salmonbellies Junior A team.

He’s a rock-solid defender with a great pedigree, in that his dad Rich had a professional career in the NLL.

Their third pick was Aidan Murphy, who is a big, strong left-handed attack from Maple Ridge. André had the impression of having fallen into the draft.

“It’s great that we can catch him when we have. He has the size and the strength to play right away.

The next name called was Austen Cooke, who is a hard working defenseman from Maple Ridge who also played with the Saints.

Beau Chetner of Penticton is another sibling to a current Burrard, as Jean-Luc was an impact player with Maple Ridge. Beau is a right-handed offensive player.

The Burrards had had many brothers in training over the years.

“It’s easier to have your brother playing with you than against you,” says André.

Robert Whyte came next, and he’s a player from Washington State who didn’t play next year, and the Burrards used their last selection to take Alex Nimmo, who is a face-off specialist .

“Congratulations to the players who heard their names called during the 2022 WLA Junior Draft. We look forward to welcoming them to the WLA and returning to the field from May 27,” said WLA Commissioner Paul Dal Monte. .
